use of color in graphic design

Choosing Colors for Marketing and Design

Colors have a huge impact our psychology, if you are just starting a company or changing your branding be sure to consider color. I can help so call me and we can talk about your companies needs and the symbolic impact of color.

By psychology I mean colors affect moods, feelings, memories, thoughts. Your mind is heavily affected by colors. If you want to go in depth colors can be warm or cold. Generally the left side of the spectrum is considered cool and the right is considered warm. You can also have the same basic color in warm or cold versions (for example pastels are all cool) below cooler vesions of colors are show on the right.

Every color has positive and negative conotations, use a color with a positive message to get the positive connotation.

PURPLES:
Purple is a mixture of red and blue and generallly considered calming, cool, and dark versions are associated with royalty and spirituality (think king's robe) while lighter purples such as lavender are associated with romance. You will increase energy with redder purples and have a calming effect with cooler blue ones.
BLUES:
Blue is a common favorite and is associated with trust and stability. It can seem conservative, it is a very corporate color (think power suit). Light blue is very serene and comforting. Many companies choose to mix dark and light blues.
GREENS:
Green is incredibly popular because it symbolizes nature and cleanliness, brown and green are often combined to say "organic" as in the colors of plants and earth and lime green is often used to say "fruity", "flavorful" or "tart" (think organic).

YELLOWS:
Yellows are very commonly used in the food industry with red because yellow is warm and happy (think smiley face). Yellow is also use for caution or warnings, it grabs your attention (yellow is especially common in the fast food industry, these two combined stimulate your appetite).

ORANGES:
Orange is a color commonly found in nature (fruit, peppers and flowers). A light peach is very soothing, if you want attention orange does it very well without alarming people like red. Orange is also happy and healthy while muted oranges are often used to symbolize fall or the harvest (think attention!).

REDS:
Red has a huge variety of uses from romance and passion to alarm and fear. It just depends how you use it. A deep dark red is associated with wine, blood and passion, pinks with romance. The bottom line is that red demands action (think passion).
